What kind of thing can I put in the cistern?

Grandparents might have said a brick - but that's not such a good ideas as it might disintegrate over time and clog up the pipes. Try a bottle filled with water.

Beware of

Whatever you put in the cistern make sure it's not obstructing the flush mechanism.

Macerators and duel flush

If your toilet is fitted with a macerator (something that breaks the "flush" into small pieces) or is a duel flush toilet then don't put anything in the cistern.
